SUMMARY:Unemployment Insurance-Who is going to pay?
DESCRIPTION:Healey Administration Agrees to UI Deal to Resolve $2.5B Mistake:\nEmployers Will Pay\nJoin us Tuesday\, May 6th via Zoom  9:00-10:00 a.m. to learn more:\nThe looming $2.5 billion UI liability question that had been hanging over employers’ heads for over 18 months has been answered\, with news of a deal between the state and the federal government.  Under the recent agreement negotiated by the Healey Administration\, employers will be required to pay back $2.1 billion over the next decade\, to correct an error made during the Baker Administration when federal funds were incorrectly spent.  The agreement was signed on one of the last days of the Biden administration.  RAM reacted:\n“It’s discouraging we have to pay for this\,” RAM President Jon Hurst said of the latest settlement. “The fact that we have what is frankly a collapsing system even without this additional $2.1 billion\, and adding to the fact we’re still paying the $2.7 billion from the prior administration\, and now this\, all for claims [related to pandemic-era mandatory shutdowns] that were really the government’s fault\, not the employers’ fault\, it’s a tough thing\, it’s very costly.”  On the plus side\, Hurst said he’s hopeful “that it appears there’s some willingness to talk about reforming the system. . . . Maybe this will be a tradeoff that employers will see as worthwhile.”\nRAM will continue to advocate for the state to cover some of the costs associated with this mistake and will continue to push for meaningful UI reforms this legislative session.\n \n\nRAM President and CEO\, Jon Hurst will be joining  virtually on May 6th to help our business owners understand the ramifications of the plan that the present administration has chosen to implement. \n? \n \nJon B. Hurst\, President & CEO\n\nJon Hurst has served as President of the Retailers Association of Massachusetts (RAM) since 1990. As CEO of the 4\,000-member statewide trade association\, Hurst manages the member services\, education and public affairs of the organization. RAM was organized in 1918 as the Voice of Retailing in Massachusetts\, and today represents stores and restaurants of all types and sizes. \n\n

SUMMARY:Breaking Through the Noise: How Congress Can Provide Tax Certainty and Reduce Red Tape for Small Businesses
DESCRIPTION:Rockland Trust / Cranberry Country Chamber Speaker Series\nWednesday\, March 6th  8:30 – 9:45 am via Zoom\nJoin us as Josh McLeod\, Director of NFIB Federal Government Regulations helps our small businesses \nSmall businesses continue to face significant headwinds\, including high energy costs\, inflation\, workforce shortages\, increasing regulatory burdens\, and tax uncertainty from the expiration of Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) provisions\, most notably the small business deduction (199A). On January 1\, 2024\, one of the most expansive small business regulations in history went into effect. This beneficial ownership reporting requirement will require 32.6 million small businesses to report ownership information to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Additionally\, small businesses face a massive tax increase at the end of 2025. Congress must pass the Main Street Tax Certainty Act to provide tax certainty to pass-through businesses across the country. \nREGISTER\nBio:  Josh McLeod is Director of Federal Government Relations at NFIB\, the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization. In this role\, Josh oversees the organization’s regulatory portfolio. Josh came to NFIB after spending nearly 12 years in the U.S. Senate\, working for Senator Ron Johnson. Josh graduated from Widener University in Pennsylvania and lives in Virginia with his wife and three children.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series: Cyber Insurance & Your Insurance Co.
DESCRIPTION:Rockland Trust Speaker Series:\nWhat Your Insurance Company Won’t Tell You \nAbout Your Cyber Insurance\nWednesday\, September 27   8:30 – 9:45 am via Zoom\nWith Will MacFee\nREGISTER\nExpect to learn:\n\n\nWhat Insurance Companies assume you have in place\n\n\nHow to prove you are doing what you say you’re doing\n\n\nWhat you MUST do after a breach\n\n\nWill MacFee bio:\nSince 1989\, Systems Support has worked with Boston and South Shore small businesses to help them use the best of enterprise technology. The company was started by brothers Brian and Willie MacFee.  \nBrian MacFee grew up in Weymouth and went to Wentworth and Northeastern University after high school. Brian’s job as a Test Engineering Manager at LTX where he first encountered the IBM PC. In the late 80’s\, Brian noticed these personal computers showing up on people’s desks\, and became involved in networking them together\, and productivity skyrocketed. After some conversations with his brother Willie\, Systems Support was started on the front deck of Brian’s home.  \nFast forward to 2008\, after installing over 7000 computers in over 50 schools in Boston and Providence\, Brian assumed full ownership of the company in 2008 as Willie retired. Fast forward again to 2016 and Brian’s son Will joins the company.  \nWill MacFee grew up in Marshfield and after school went to North Carolina State University for Nuclear Engineering. At school he worked on various simulation projects and passed the exam to operate the school’s nuclear reactor. After school\, he worked for two years at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the Office of Nuclear Reactors. With the nuclear industry slowing down\, Will joined Systems Support bringing the safety mindset from the reactor world. Coupled with the technical skills from networking computers during simulation research\, Will learned quickly.  \nFast forward a few more years to 2023\, and Brian retires on his 64th birthday. Will MacFee\, his son\, takes over as President of the company. Brian trained him well\, and Will has helped the company meet the new challenges of running an IT business.  \nOver the past few years\, IT has rapidly changed from “digital plumbing” to security compliance. As cybercrime made headlines and hit businesses of all sizes\, the needs of companies changed. Today\, IT companies not only have to make sure everything works as expected but also must defend against cyberattacks like email compromise and ransomware. Every day the threat actors get better and we need to as well.   \nRather than take an approach of sealing every door and battening down the hatches\, Will used another mantra from the NRC: “reasonable assurance of adequate protection”. There are plenty of common sense steps to take to protect a company’s data assets. No solution is perfect\, and as long as one understands the risk the choice is easier for what actions one has to take.   \nWhen you work with Systems Support\, you have a direct relationship with the people providing the service. We hate bureaucracy (Will saw enough of it at the NRC) so we do everything we can to make it easy to do business with us. You will work with the same name and faces on a consistent basis\, people who know your business and your people. When you work with us\, you become part of the family.
